About these drawings
|
These drawings are placed in a reverse chronological order, (roughly). The more recent drawings being the first that you will see. New drawings will be added in this manner as they are prepared. If older drawings are located they will be moved to the end. The thumbnail pages are numbered in reverse to reflect their chronological order. (the lower numbers are earlier works) Whenever appropriate, comments or titles have been added. There seems to be a gap between the years 1987 and 1997 where almost no drawings exist. Evidently the drawings during this period were burned in my house fire. I am still searching where and when I can with the hope that I shall find some of these missing drawings. There are crates of charred objects from the fire that were placed in storage by friends and family. I have not yet found the time, or the heart, to go completely through it all. It is a locked room full of the charred memories of my youthful past. There are my journals and hundreds of photographs yet to be pried from their black melted wrappers. Some additional background ... My home in San Francisco California of 17 years, (1978 - 1995), burned to the ground on July 5th 1995 @ 4 AM. I was in the house at the time, alone ... The home itself and the plot of land it sat upon was a work of art... an oasis of manicured gardens surrounding an incredible structure which I can only describe as a "deco-cubist" retreat. It was built by brilliant German Architect, Artist, Sculptor and Writer, Professor Ernest Mundt, a mentor and friend of mine for the years that I lived in his creation. Professor Mundt spoke eight languages and was published in five. He wrote books and articles about such diverse subjects as Art History and French cooking. Mundt was also a Teacher and Assistant Director at the San Francisco Art Institute During the 1950's and early 60's. When we met in 1979, Mundt had already retired and so agreed to advise me during my earliest days as a painter. Ernest became the only 'Art Teacher' I ever had. My relationship with Ernest made the almost total loss of my vast art collection all the more tragic. The loss of the house that Mundt had built was a tragedy beyond words. Professor Mundt died less than one year prior to the fire. He was survived by his wife, Gloria who was there to witness the burning and the aftermath. I am thankful that Ernest died before the event. I was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns. The collection of art and artifacts that I collected over decades, including hundreds of drawings and many of my paintings, were resigned to the ashes. I was unable to create art for a long time after the fire and was hospitalized again several times for depressions and physical ailments directly connected to this occurrence. This included addiction to narcotic drugs which were supplied in great quantities immediately after the injuries I sustained, but then were suddenly withdrawn by the doctors. In June 1997, I was able to first muster the courage to inspect the storage area where charred remains pulled from the blaze were deposited immediately after the fire. It was there I found a blackened shoe box. At first glance within, it appeared to be merely scorched papers. However, after carefully peeling away the outermost blackened and crumbling leaves, I found them ... Several drawings were somehow spared incineration! Although the outermost were ruined, many of the inner pictures survived and I restored as many as I could. I was able to save nearly 100 images. I have scanned most of them and placed them here in my drawing section. So here, I present for your inspection, these drawings, many no more than scribbles on scraps of waste paper or the back of insurance applications from my many grueling years as an insurance broker. Most of them were evidently drawn during the years 1981 to 1987 as I sat at my desk selling insurance, (or plotting vengeful dismemberment's). Here you may find, (As one of my more generous and articulate guest book entries once put it), more clues to "The endless Psychotic Episode which IS the mind of R. S. Connett". To that I say ... If there is any ring of truth in that, it is because I am a reflection of the "endless Psychotic Episode" which is the mentality of our civilization in the year 2000. I'm just like everybody else. I have identified the drawings which were saved from the fire with notations on the pages. Also included are more current drawings. These illustrate the gradual transformation which my drawings have taken "post" fire. Some of these drawings were done while I was addicted to drugs. To write me a letter ... click here |
